Axie Infinity, the popular Pokémon-style game, is expanding its offerings. The development company Sky Mavis, co-founded by Jeffrey Zirlin, announced that "land will be another game mode built within the Axie universe."

In a recent blog post, the team teased the new land game for Axie, which allows players to own plots of land in the Lunacia world of the Axie creatures. This introduces a new gameplay element to the Axie NFTs that gained significant popularity last year. The blog post also included a short teaser trailer showcasing the stunning artwork that drives the game.

Axie Infinity had a highly successful year in 2021 as a pioneer in the blockchain-driven "Play-to-Earn" revolution. The governance token AXS experienced a price increase of 149 times, reaching $88.

According to Token Terminal, the game generated revenue of $1.3 billion last year. However, with the increasing pressure to maintain its dominance, some players expressed dissatisfaction with the gameplay offered by the most popular game modes, which include quests and battles.

Zirlin acknowledged the concerns and said, "The Axie game that players are enjoying today was created by a small team. It's not fair to judge the Axie created in 2019 by the standards of 2022, but I think users will be amazed and surprised when they see what we've developed with a larger team."

Although releasing a game trailer is not uncommon, Zirlin emphasized its importance, stating, "I think land is also an important opportunity to showcase our artistic prowess."

Zirlin mentioned that the land game's official release date has not yet been revealed, but it is expected to be in 2022. The full game will be released in stages, starting with land and resource management elements. The second stage will introduce skill development, social engagement, and cooperation. Finally, the third stage will add competition and strategic elements, including battles against hostile forces, such as the invading Chimera as described in the whitepaper.

Zirlin emphasized that it is crucial to prove that Axie Infinity is not just one game mode but a complete game world. This will allow for more versatile gameplay with Axie assets. Additionally, Sky Mavis plans to develop a software development kit (SDK) to enable others to build experiences within the Axie universe, including its land.

The Axie Infinity universe aims to provide a similar experience to the game Roblox, where users can explore different lands and earn resources and items. These items and resources will be tradeable, similar to Axie and its two tokens. It is possible that Axie's trading platform, Ronin, may open in Lunacia in the future.

While the whitepaper mentions that AXS can be obtained by exploring Lunacia, Zirlin declined to provide further details. He also did not confirm whether owning Axies would be a requirement to own land or if there would be any open public resources available to everyone.
